Special Regulations
These Regulations are specific to the Faculty of Social Sciences and must be read in conjunction with the Academic General Regulations of the University of Eswatini. In the event of a conflict, the Academic General Regulations take precedence.
The nature of training offered by the various Departments within the Faculty is through a suitable combination of lectures, tutorials, assignments, field placements, moot courts, mock trials, research projects, tests and examinations.
After graduation, students can join the public service, private sector and NGOs. Some become entrepreneurs. Furthermore, and depending on their performance in undergraduate programmes, students proceed to undertake graduate studies either at UNESWA or other universities.
The majority of the Faculty’s graduates who go for graduate studies abroad successfully complete their programmes, a factor that is attributed to the high quality of tuition at the undergraduate level within the Faculty.
Against the background of the Faculty’s objectives, this handbook contains details of academic programmes offered by Departments in the Faculty as well as other Faculties. The programmes have descriptions of course outlines and other relevant information for use by students, staff, policy-makers, potential employers and members of the general public.
1 Entrance Requirements
As in Academic General Regulations.
An applicant who intends to major in Economics, Geography, Environmental Science & Planning (GEP), Mathematics or Statistics must also have a C grade or better in SGCSE/IGCSE/GCE O’Level Mathematics. There will be no Mathematics requirement for an applicant who intends to major in Demography, Political Science, Public Administration or Sociology.
2 Duration of the Programme
The normal duration for the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Science shall be 8 semesters of full-time study.
3 Degree Structure
The subjects offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences for the Bachelor of Arts in Social Science degree are: Demography, Economics, GEP, Mathematics, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology and Statistics.
Normally, a student registered for Level 1 shall include, in addition to the General Education Courses, a minimum of three (3) subjects per semester in his/her registration. The non- General Education Courses shall include: (i) Courses from at least two (2) potential major subjects and their corresponding required courses, and; (ii) Other courses necessary to satisfy the number of credits required per semester.
At Level 2, a student shall select two (2) subjects from which he/she qualifies from the list of subjects taken in Level 1. A student then has to take and pass all core and required courses listed in the specific departmental offerings from the selected subject majors.
4 Assessment and Grading
5 Continuous Assessment Components
Continuous Assessment (C.A.) serves to evaluate a student’s learning progress throughout the semester. Components typically include, but are not limited to; assignments, presentations, field reports, tests, and for certain modules, practical components like moot courts and mock trials.
For BASS Degrees (Economics, Political & Administrative Studies, Sociology, Statistics, Demography): Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW): The C.A. component will generally consist of at least two (2) tests. Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW): C.A. components will incorporate field-specific practical work, such as clinical modules, moot courts, and field placements, in addition to standard assignments and tests.
6 Minimum Pass Requirements
To pass any module within the Faculty of Social Sciences, a student must meet two conditions: Achieve a minimum final overall mark of 50% (Grade C) or better. Meet any specific minimum performance requirements for the examination component as stipulated by the University’s General Academic Regulations.
7 Progression Criteria
- A student shall be allowed to proceed to the next academic level (e.g., Level 1 to Level 2) provided they satisfy the following: Pass the total number of credits/modules required for progression as defined by the University’s General Academic Regulations.
- Meet all specified prerequisite and progression requirements for their intended Major/Specialisation as detailed in the relevant departmental section of this Handbook (e.g., specific minimum grades for Economics majors or passing introductory modules for Political Science majors).
8 Academic Probation and Suspension
Students whose academic performance falls below the minimum required standards for progression shall be placed on Academic Probation or may face suspension from the programme, as defined by the University’s General Academic Regulations. The Faculty reserves the right to enforce its Special Regulations regarding probation and suspension to ensure adherence to professional standards, particularly for the LL.B. and BSW degrees.
9 Resits, Supplementary Examinations, and Module Repeats
- A student who obtains a final grade of F (less than 50%) in a module must be re-examined. The format of the re-examination (e.g., a resit examination, a supplementary examination, or a repeat of the entire module) is subject to the University’s General Academic Regulations and the specific rules of the Department offering the module.
- The maximum grade obtainable upon successful re-examination or supplementary examination shall be 50% (Grade C).
- Any student readmitted to the University after being unregistered for two or more semesters must follow the programme of study requirements and regulations outlined for the current Academic Year.
10 Limit on Repeats
11 Graduation Requirements
To be eligible for the award of a degree, a student must:
· Successfully complete the minimum number of course credits specified for their respective degree programme (BASS, LL.B., or BSW).
· Pass all compulsory and core modules for their declared Major(s) and Minor(s).
· Meet any specific programme requirements, such as the completion of a Legal Research Paper for the LL.B. degree or required field placement hours for the BSW degree.
· Attain the minimum Cumulative Programme Average (CPA) specified in the University’s General Academic Regulations
12 Change of Major/Specialisation/Minor
Students approved for a change of Major/Specialisation/Minor during the current Academic Year must strictly follow the programme of study requirements, course pre-requisites, and regulations outlined in the current Handbook. All changes are subject to departmental approval and must meet the relevant minimum admission and progression requirements (e.g., prerequisite grades in introductory modules).

Bachelor of Law (LLB)

The Department of Law offers a programme leading to the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. The normal duration for this degree is 10 semesters (5 years) of full-time study.
Bachelor of Arts in Social Work
Undergraduate

Full Time
Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree programme, which is a distinct professional qualification designed to prepare students for the social work profession.
Bachelor of Arts in Social Science (BASS)
Undergraduate

Full Time
Sociology as one major in a Combined Major Bachelor of Arts in Social Science (BASS) degree. Sociology can be combined with other subjects such as Demography, Economics, Geography, Environmental Science and Planning, Mathematics, Political Science, Public Administration, and Statistics.
